If you’ve recently bought a new car or you're looking to restore that "showroom shine" to your current ride, you’ve likely heard of ceramic coatings. But when you start looking for prices, you’ll see everything from $150 "spray-on" deals to $2,000+ premium packages.

Why is there such a massive gap? And what should you actually expect to pay for a quality job in Melbourne?

In this guide, we’ll break down the real costs of ceramic coating and what goes into the price.

In Australia, a professional ceramic coating can typically range from $699 to $2,500 depending on the type of vehicle and the package. At Vivid Auto Detailing, we offer a range of options to suit different needs and budgets:

  • 1-Year Protection: Starts from $150 (Great for a temporary boost in gloss and ease of cleaning).

  • 5-Year Ceramic Protection: Starts from $699.

  • 7-Year Graphene Protection: Starts from $899.

  • 9-Year Premium Ceramic: Starts from $1,099.

2. What Are You Actually Paying For?

When you pay for a professional coating, a portion of the price is the bottle of coating itself. The remainder of the cost comes from the labor and preparation.

Paint Correction (The Secret to the Shine)

A ceramic coating is a typically a semi-permanent bond to your paint that can have durability periods between 12 months and several years. If there are swirls, scratches, or water spots on the paint, the coating will lock them in and will be seen until the coating needs reapplying sometime later. Before we apply any coating, we perform a decontamination wash and a "cut and polish" (paint correction) to reduce swirls, minor scratches and imperfections . This ensures the paint is as close to perfect as possible so the coating can bond properly and look its best.

While some installers may use cheaper, imported products, we choose NXTZEN coatings. These are Australian-engineered and CSIRO-tested specifically for our harsh environment. Investing in a coating designed for Australian conditions and tested for chemical resistance from bird poo (which contains acid that can damage your paint), bug splatter and other chemicals, is the only way to ensure it actually lasts years rather than months (along with proper maintenance .

Vehicle Size

It takes significantly more time and product to prepare and coat a Toyota LandCruiser than it does a Corolla. Larger vehicles naturally sit at the higher end of the price scale because of the surface area involved.

3. Dealing with Dealership "Protection"

Many car dealerships will offer "Paint Protection" starting anywhere from $1,200 to $3,000 when you buy a new car (based on discussions I've had with cutomers over the years). Although the price is high, the quality of application can be rushed. At Vivid Auto Detailing, our professional packages are often up to 50% cheaper than dealership prices, and because we are specialist detailers, we spend many hours on your car preparing it before applying the coating—not 1 hour in a wash bay.

4. Don’t Forget the Extras

A total protection package often includes more than just the paint. If you want the ultimate "new car" feeling for years, consider these additions:

  • Interior Protection: (Leather, vinyl, and fabric) Starting at $350.

  • Glass Coating: For better visibility in rain, starting at $200.

  • Wheel Coatings: To make cleaning off brake dust a breeze starting at $150

Is It Worth It?

Think of ceramic coating as an investment rather than an expense. It reduces the time you spend washing your car, eliminates the need for waxing, and helps maintain a higher resale value when it’s time to sell. You car will stay cleaner longer as a coating reduces surface tension so contaminants find it harder to stick to your cars surface. It also adds gloss and chemical resistance which is very important to the protection of the paintwork and trim.
